The completion of the project for calculating the carbon footprint of products

05.10.2021

Moscow, September 20, 2021 - the project for calculating the carbon footprint of the main products of Norilsk Nickel has been completed!

Nexia Pacioli Consulting has completed a project for calculating the carbon footprint of the main products of Norilsk Nickel, the world's largest producer of palladium and high-grade nickel, as well as one of the largest producers of platinum and copper.
The calculations were performed following the standards of product life cycle assessment ISO 14040:2006 (Environmental Management Life cycle assessment Principles and framework), ISO 14044:2006 (Environmental management Life cycle assessment Requirements and guidelines) using the from-cradle-to-gate approach - from the beginning to the end of the production cycle.
Based on the results of the calculation, Norilsk Nickel received an expert opinion from an independent European consultant Sphera GmbH. This expert opinion confirms the compliance of the developed methodology with international ISO standards, as well as the transparency and reliability of the data obtained.

The calculation of the carbon footprint began in April 2021. Our company's experts and Norilsk Nickel specialists jointly developed a model for calculating the carbon footprint of the main products of the vertically integrated Russian mining and metals production complex, distributed the sources of greenhouse gas emissions into about 40 single production units, calculated emissions by scopes 1, 2 and 3 following the Greenhouse Gas Protocol methodology.

The project also developed methodological instructions and other internal regulatory documents that will allow Norilsk Nickel to systematically organize the process of annual calculation of the carbon footprint of products.
According to verified calculations, Norilsk Nickel has one of the lowest values among international mining and metals companies in terms of absolute and relative greenhouse gas emissions. About half of the total energy consumed by the group occurs in renewable energy sources. In the coming years, the company's main efforts will be focused on further reduction of the intensity of greenhouse gas emissions per unit of production and on reducing absolute CO2 emissions, this plan is embedded in the comprehensive environmental and climate change strategy of Norilsk Nickel.

Pavel Popov, Director of the Strategic Planning Department commented: "The carbon footprint will soon be an integral characteristic of the product, and the calculation of the carbon footprint an integral corporate procedure such as financial accounting and reporting. The results of the joint project with Nexia Pacioli Consulting allowed Norilsk Nickel to increase the degree of openness and operate with reliable data regarding the carbon footprint of our products, which is an important component of the company's competitiveness and proof of commitment to global goals in the field of decarbonization."
